The word vivitorment is a word apropos of the need to describe procedures that literally tortures defenseless animals.

Animal Research Industry

The vivisection industry is made up of tens of thousands of individuals and entities who profit from the misery, suffering, and deaths of more than 115 million animals a year (exact numbers are hard to come by since mice, rats, and birds, who make up 80 to 90 percent of those animals used, are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act and therefore go uncounted).

The best way to understand how the vivisection industry works is to start with the animals themselves. First, there isn't a species of nonhuman animal experimenters won't exploit. Dogs, mice, rats, cats, fruit flies, zebra fish, macaques, baboons, chimpanzees, horses, pigs, chickens, bees, etc., are all up for grabs. Second, animals used in experimentation are supplied to laboratories by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-licensed Class A and/or Class B dealers. Class A dealers sell "purpose-bred" animals, born into this world only to be experimented on and then killed. Class B dealers supply "random source" animals purchased at auctions, "adopted" from unsuspecting individuals who placed "free to a good home" ads in their local papers and/or are stolen from people's backyards and outside of stores while their human companions are inside. Finally, these animals are offered for sale to experimenters via word of mouth and in publications like Lab Animal magazine. Also advertised in this publication are the cages, miniature guillotines (used to chop off the heads of live rats), and other sadistic devices used by the vivisection industry.

Animals bred and procured for use in experimentation can end up in any one of the thousands of laboratories (owned and operated by the makers of personal care and household products, colleges and universities, drug and chemical manufacturers, state and federal regulatory agencies, etc) in the United States that conduct experiments on animals. Furthermore, there are as many different types of animal experiments as there are laboratories conducting them; animals are cloned, bred for their organs, addicted to drugs and alcohol, forced to inhale and/or ingest toxic substances, subjected to maternal deprivation experiments, purposely deafened with loud noises, made to suffer strokes, blinded, burned, stapled, given diabetes and cancer, and infected with horrifying viruses like Ebola. Most people are shocked to learn that such abuses, when "properly conducted" in the laboratory setting, are exempt from state anti-cruelty statutes.

While every laboratory that experiments on animals other than mice, rats, and birds is licensed and inspected by the USDA and expected to adhere to the minimal standards of care as set forth by the Animal Welfare Act (e.g., proper cage size, adequate food, water, and veterinary care, etc.), funding comes from a variety of sources: gifts and grants from private individuals and foundations, donations solicited from well-intentioned but uninformed members of the public, industry money, etc. Nonetheless, the largest provider of funds for animal experimentation is the federal government. Every year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) doles out hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in support of some of the most bizarre and sadistic animal experiments ever conceived. One animal experimenter at New York University (NYU) received $250,000 dollars from NIH to construct a crack pipe through which monkeys, sealed inside old refrigerators, were forced to smoke crack cocaine.

In support of those who directly profit from animal experimentation (animal dealers and shippers, laboratory-equipment makers, experimenters and the institutions that they work for, etc.) is the vivisection lobby. Working hand in hand with its supporters in industry, academia, and government, the animal experimentation lobby enjoys a self-serving steady flow of taxpayer dollars while fighting animal protection legislation at every turn. They even successfully opposed giving protection to mice, rats, and birds, claiming it would be too costly and burdensome.

The best way to tackle the vivisection industry is to demand that your alma mater stop experimenting on animals, buy those products that are cruelty-free, give only to those charities that do not experiment on animals and demand the immediate validation and implementation of humane, more effective, and readily available non-animal tests from the federal government (e.g. Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Transportation, etc.)

How Animals Wind Up in Labs

Companion Animals
Many dogs and cats used in laboratory experiments come from companies that breed animals for research purposes. Others were once trusting companions who simply got lost–or stolen–from their families.

  • Pound Seizure
Animal shelters in certain states are required to turn over homeless dogs to government-run facilities for medical experiments if they are not claimed by former or new guardians within five days of arriving at the shelter. This is commonly known as pound seizure.

Three states require pound seizure of government-run facilities: Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Utah. Thirteen states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia, forbid pound seizure. Most other states have no law and leave it up to county or town governments to decide.

  • Class A Dealers
Anyone selling animals to laboratories or selling more than 24 dogs or cats per year at the wholesale level must be licensed. Class A dealers maintain their own breeding colonies, such as puppy mills.

According to the States News Service, Class A dealers or breeders who choose to release animals for research; people who donate their companion animals to research; and private and federal facilities that breed animals are capable of supplying far more cats and dogs than are required by current laboratory demand.

  • Class B Dealers
Anyone 18 or older who is willing to pay a fee can obtain a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Class B dealer license. In states that allow pound seizure, Class B dealers may buy animals from pounds and animal shelters. "Bunchers" are also a vital source of animals in the dealers' network. Using sedatives hidden in meat, females in heat, and nets, they lure or trap dogs and cats. Some thieves pose as animal control officers and comb neighborhoods in vans, "confiscating" animals without tags. Many bunchers also purchase litters from unsuspecting people who allow their animal companions to breed and obtain animals from "Free to a Good Home" advertisements.

C.C. Baird, the largest and most notorious Class B animal dealer in the United States, purchased animals from people using false addresses and non-existent driver's license numbers. In March 2004, after years of efforts by animal protection organizations, the USDA filed a 108-page complaint listing hundreds of violations against C.C. Baird, his wife, Patsy, and their daughters, Jeanette and Patricia.

States News Service reports that there are about 50 "random source" animal dealers across the United States. They often keep hundreds of animals in squalid conditions and give them little food and water. These animals often are eventually sold to research laboratories for $200 to $500 each.

Primates
Chimpanzees and other primates used in U.S. laboratories are primarily captive-bred. Unwanted chimpanzees from zoos and circuses are sometimes sold to laboratories. Poachers also shoot chimpanzee mothers and take their infants for research. Many of the captured baby chimpanzees die before they reach the laboratory.

The Oregon National Primate Research Center brags that it maintains colonies of rhesus monkeys, snow monkeys, vervets, and baboons who were taken from the wild and/or brought to the center from other facilities.

Rodents and Other Animals
Birds, frogs, pigs, sheep, cattle, and many naturally free-roaming animals (e.g., prairie dogs and owls) are also common victims of experimentation. So are mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and rabbits.

Most small animals used in laboratory experiments are bred by callous companies who view animals as little more than walking pin cushions and test tubes with whiskers. For example, Charles River Laboratories is one of the world's largest suppliers of rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other animals for laboratory experiments. The Jackson Laboratory supplies approximately 2 million specially bred JAX Mice to major universities, medical schools, and research laboratories in the world every year.

Colleges / Universities

Colleges / Universities

Does My College Use Animals?

There are several steps that you can take to help you determine the extent of animal use, both in teaching and in research, at a college or university:

1. Institutions that experiment on animals other than mice, rats, and birds (which are specifically excluded from coverage under the Animal Welfare Act) must be licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. You can see if schools are listed by checking here.

2. All institutions that receive federal grants for research using vertebrate animals must file an assurance with the National Institutes of Health that they will abide by the Public Health Service (PHS) Principles regarding animal care. This list can be found here (click on the state you want at the top). Keep in mind that only schools receiving federal funds for the studies need to file an assurance with the government. Schools may still be experimenting on mice, rats, and birds without being on this list if the studies are funded by grants from private corporations or if the animals are being used in teaching exercises or experiments that are not federally funded.

3. For schools that are not on either list, you should check the schools' Web sites (or Google them if the sites do not have a search feature) to look for evidence of animal research and animal use in teaching. You might have to do some searching, but generally any college that has a biology department and/or a psychology department will use animals in some way. One clue to animal use is the existence of an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), sometimes called by other names. Even schools that do not use animals often partner with institutions that do. For example, Bard College is on neither list, but it has a partnership with Rockefeller University (which is one of the top recipients in the U.S. of funding for animal experiments) so that students can get "hands on" experience that they can't get at Bard.

4. Many schools still teach dissection in biology, anatomy, and other life science courses. Physiology classes often involve live animal exercises with turtles, frogs, rabbits, and rats. Find the course catalog on the school's Web site and look for life science classes, then read each syllabus to check for dissection or live-animal exercises. When in doubt, call the university department directly and ask about what kinds of live and dead animals they use.
